Dear Friends,

I hope this summer finds you as healthy as it is hot outside. As I throw pitches at my daughter’s softball games, I can attest to the rising mercury! Despite the heat, there is still so much happening around New Orleans.

First, as we have for the last few months, we are focusing on the oil spill. At the last Council Meeting, Jean Lafitte Mayor Tim Kerner, Jefferson Parish Councilmember Chris Roberts, Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser, St. Tammany Parish President Kevin Davis and St. Bernard Parish President Craig Taffaro, Jr. presented updates on the oil leak and its effect on neighboring parishes. My thoughts are with those individuals who are being affected the most.

Good news for our city came from the Mayor’s office last week when he announced plans for a hospital in New Orleans East. This much needed hospital is a sign of progress in the East and will hopefully attract residents to re-invest in the area.

In other parts of town, New Orleans did not come up short in entertainment and cultural events, even in the heat! My wife and I ran with the bulls through the French Quarter, and later that day I attended a ‘Blessing of the Fleets’ in City Park, re-establishing the gondola and bike rentals. That same day was also a ribbon-cutting at Bodenger Playground in Algiers as well as a block party in Uptown hosted by St. Henry’s Catholic Church in honor of the Feast of St. Henry’s. What a full and diverse calendar!

It is an honor to be part of a city that is so full of energy and activity! I hope that as people watch us in the news every evening, they see a city that is not covered in oil but one that is teeming with life.

I hope you are enjoying your summer and taking part in local events.

Your City Council President,

Arnie Fielkow
